We are a European based game developer currently working on a next generation single player fantasy computer role playing game (CRPG) named Gigax. In short Gigax will be an amalgamation of Ultima, D&D, DSA, the Witcher games and books, pen & paper RPG gaming with a GM and our own vision. And it will be a game with a revolutionary modding system.
Whats so “next gen” about Gigax
It’s how and what we take from RPG’s like Ultima, D&D, DSA, NWN and worlds like “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Witcher” and how we mix it together with our own ideas and vision of what a good CRPG should be like. Part of this vision is a plausible world where stories develop from simply living in this world like it’s in real life. We will incorporate the good things about playing a pen & paper RPG with your friends where everybody brings it’s own style and story to the table and into the mix. Where often the little things matter the most like the dwarf and the elf fighting over who is better at whatever at the fireplace during a rest. It will be a CRPG where number crunching will be avoided as much as possible. Talents for example will develop naturally just by using them and characters will learn new things by doing them. There will be no superstitious computer RPG logic nonsense like you find it in most RPG’s today. For example, like in any pen & paper session with a reasonable GM your characters will not be able to try stealing the underwear someone is actually wearing in brought daylight in front of several other people including a town watch! If you want your characters to steal something, use your brains. E.g., you could check out the target, look for an opportunity. Find out where he lives and what his daily schedule looks like and then come back at night when he is sleeping and maybe his underwear is hanging over a chair next to his bed. Much easier, trust us. 😉 You will simply not have to think in a kind of games logic to figure things out. Just use your brains like in real life to figure out how to reach your goal, how to do something and what to do next. Another next gen feature will be that every single NPC in Gigax will have a back story, something meaningful to say, a daily schedule and will also be recruitable into your party. How will that be possible with a development team as small as ours you might ask. Read the next paragraph to find out.Â
Modding
Next we want to talk a bit about player made content or modding. A small team like ours can only do so much to create a complex and believable CRPG world. We go so far to say that even if you have the biggest teams available today you will not be able to achieve what we will be able to achieve with our new approach to modding. Our new modding system is one never be seen before. This system will enable every player of the game no matter his experience to easily create additional content for the game. From simple things e.g. a named sword, an event at a rest in the woods or a back story for an NPC up to complete new quests. We go so far to boldly state that the system will be so simple and easy to use that this will enable the world of Gigax to become the most lively and diverse CRPG world that ever existed. You will be surprised when we finally show you how this will be done about how simple but elegant and powerful that is. And exactly therein lies a big part of the “next gen” we talked about earlier. As a side note, the mod content will be distributed to the players via a web based central database where players can upload, subscribe and vote on mods from within the game.Â
